Welcome to Year 5
Welcome to Year 5 from Mr Rich and Mrs Comins.
Mr Rich and Mrs Comins work hard to ensure that we are ready for Upper Key Stage 2. We're now preparing ourselves to be role models to the younger children, but also ready to learn. We have a ‘can-do’ attitude towards our work.
In Year 5, we love to learn. Our teacher and teaching assistant ensure that our learning is fun, but focussed on helping us to be the best we can be! Marvellous Maths, Exciting English and Terrific Topic is the order of each day, with thrills and spills along the way!
We will be exploring lots of exciting, engaging and interesting cross-curricular topics this year. These include: ‘Life is the Pits!’, ‘Alchemy Island’, ‘Spectacular Space’, ‘Invaders and Settlers’, ‘Resplendent Rainforests’ and ‘Hola Mexico’. Some of these topics will have a Creative Homework project linked them, giving us the opportunity to show our interests, strengths and talents.
Regular reading at home and school will be encouraged along with an emphasis on learning times tables and the spelling of key words.
Maths Homework will be given out each Friday to be completed and handed in by the following Friday. Spellings will be given out weekly and tested the following week.
Mr Rich and Mrs Comins and the children promise to work hard so that we are able to be the best we can be!
Keep checking out our page to see what we get up to!
Over the last three days, Year 5 have enjoyed learning how to write algorithms. They made use of the ‘Scratch’ software in order to this. The children could even do things that Mr Rich struggled with! Technology!!!
This half term, the children have relished the opportunity to learn the Hakka. Throughout the half term, great cooperation has been demonstrated and leaders have been developed.
Making a Difference in World Presentations
During PPA this term, with Mrs Comins, Year 5 have been undertaking the RE topic of ‘Making a Difference in the World’. Last week, the children had to get into twos and create a PowerPoint presentation showing all they had learnt. Then today, the groups presented them to class....
How much salt?
This afternoon, year 5 were set a challenge by the Chief Alchemist to see how much salt cold and hot water could dissolve before a saturated solution was created. The children remembered how to create a fair test and once again showed great teamwork.
Year 5 have enjoyed learning Spanish this week and they amazed Mr Rich with how much they could remember from last year. This week we looked at Spanish numbers, days, months, and common Spanish phrases.
Year 5 had great fun this afternoon and enjoyed creating a lot of loud noise (most of it beautiful noise though!) They had to improvise and compose music for when a character travels through a portal taking them to an imaginary world.
Alchemy Island Launch
To launch our new topic of ‘Alchemy Island’ the children had a visit from the Chief Alchemist’s apprentice, who delivered a rather special brief case. Inside the case was a riddle which would provide the start location for the children’s journey through Alchemy Island....
Ben Nevis Conquerors
WOW! Erin and Jude conquered Ben Nevis over the half-term holidays. This is an incredible achievement and even more so as they raised an amazing £300 for Children in Need. They made it up and down in only 6 hours! In what looks to have been very cold and wet weather...
