The Abbey Gates Curriculum
Abbey Gates has developed their curriculum using the National Curriculum 2014. We have taken the skills required and weaved in a creative topic based approach to learning. Our team design engaging and inspiring topics that aim to accelerate pupil progress year on year.
The children are involved in the creation of the curriculum and we seek their ideas to help us personalise their learning. We try to celebrate significant dates collectively throughout the year with whole school themed approaches.
Please find attached information about what the children at Abbey Gates will be taught across the year. Please note that this is updated half termly as the team are always thinking of exciting new ideas!
This is also subject to change in light of national and local events.
Alongside the class topic planning, the teachers will also focus on basic skills in the core subjects of Maths, English and ICT. You will see these referred to as ‘non-negotiables’.
Foundation and Key Stage One
In the Foundation Stage and Key Stage One, we follow the "Letters and Sounds" programme to plan and teach phonics. Reading books are carefully matched to each child's phonics knowledge and we use a variety of reading schemes, such as oxford reading tree, songbirds, colins big cat phonics and our online resource 'bug club'.
