Welcome to Foundation
Welcome to the Foundation Stage at Abbey Gates.
Our Foundation Stage unit is made up of children in F1 (Nursery) and F2 (Reception). We are very lucky to have a large, shared environment that includes 2 indoor and 2 outdoor areas that are open and accessed throughout the day during "busy time".
Learning in Foundation takes place in many ways; child-initiated learning, small group tasks, adult directed tasks and one to one opportunities. Our projects are open - ended to allow us to follow children's interests. Regular visits within the community and visitors in school ensure our children have a wide range of experiences.
Our first project questions is: I wonder...what is special?
We will be learning all about ourselves, family, friends and celebrations.
In school, we share lots of books, songs and rhymes together - reading is essential for communication, language and literacy development. It is important that children hear stories at home regularly. Reading books at bedtime is an opportunity to spend quality time together, sharing a love of reading.
PE is every Friday and we visit the library on alternate Fridays. Please let us know if you would like to join us as we always welcome parent helpers.

Dads, Lads and Grandads Reading Event
We invited the Dads, Lads and Grandads from the Foundation Stage and Key Stage One to a special reading event today. We read lots of wonderful stories together and the children and adults had a fabulous time sharing their love of books.
In F1 we love to learn outdoors! Today we read "The Mud Pie" and practised segmenting and blending words. We then went outside and listened carefully to instructions to make our own mud pie. We filled our bowls with mud and mixed in water and sand. Finally we patted it...
Chinese New Year
We have been learning about Chinese New Year. We read stories about how people celebrate, watched dragon and lion dances and read non-fiction texts. During trekking we used ribbons and pom poms to create our own dragon dances, focussing on different movements such as up and down, round and round...
The Animal Doctor visit
The children in F1 had an exciting visit from the Animal Doctor. They are our local vets in Ravenshead. The children met Alfie the dog and Rupert the Rabbit. The Vets explained how to care for each animal and we all got the opportunity to stroke them. We...
Information for Parents: How to say the sounds.
Recently, the children were given flashcards to help them to pracise the sounds we have learnt at school. Below is a link to a useful video which is a useful guide to use when supporting your child at home. http://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/resources/sound-pronunciation-guide/
We love to learn outdoors!

The Gruffalo’s Child.
What a fabulous day we have had in F2. We have made our story map along with actions to retell the story of the Gruffalo's Child. Maybe the children could show you what we have learnt using the story map to help them!
Fire Service visit.
We have been so lucky to have a visit from the fire service! The fire fighters taught us about fire safety and showed us what they have to wear when they are putting fires out. We got chance to look at the fire engine and even had a go at...
The Wild West
Foundation have loved learning about The Wild West. They have been visited by Cowgirls on their horses and Sheriff Kelvin and have made their own tepees and dreamcatchers!
Today, F1 went on a dinosaur hunt! They worked hard to make their own binoculars before they set off,and kept count of how many of each dinosaur they saw by ticking them off on their charts. They saw Stegasaurus, Triceratops, T-Rex and a Pterodactyl. When the children returned to...
